Sensory Integration

Sensory integration is a term used to describe the way in which the brain organizes and processes information it receives from each sense. Sensations from touch, pressure, movement, hearing and vision provide the input to the brain which is then organized for movement, cognition, and learning. When this flow is interrupted, the child may experience difficulty coping with the variety of sensory experiences he/she encounters. Even the simplest of tasks become difficult. Children often receive labels such as slow learners, learning disabled, hyperactive, and defiant.

The Center for Pediatric Therapies offers evaluation and treatment for Sensory Integrative Dysfunction by a SIPT certified occupational therapist. If therapy is recommended the child will participate in carefully constructed activities designed to provide the sensory information he/she needs to both support and challenge the child’s ability to make successful, organized and skilled responses.

Therapeutic Listening

Listening is an active process involving the whole body. Therapeutic Listening programs utilize this theory, providing sound stimulation that is designed to improve functioning of the vestibulocochlear system. The vestibular component provides the body a sense of awareness in space and the cochlea is responsible for hearing and sound detection. The vestibulocochlear system allows for the integration of sound and body movement and subsequently affects muscle tone, postural control, balance, coordination, attention, and visual-spatial skills. Therapeutic listening utilizes electronically modulated music played over specifically designed headphones with the intent of affecting how sound is hear and processed.

Possible areas of improvement:

Improved attention and focus

Decreased sensitivity to sound
Improved postural control

Enhanced balance, coordination, and motor skills
Enhanced communication
Improved praxis and sequencing skills
