The Building Blocks Center for Autism is a private resource center established in 2004 by the Center for Pediatric Therapies. Building Blocks is dedicated to providing appropriate education, support, and information to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their families. Building Blocks is also committed to providing resources and training related to ASD to families and professionals throughout Danville and the surrounding areas.

Philosophy

Building Blocks recognizes that Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as the research-based method for successful treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Intensive instruction significantly increases the chances for gains in intellectual and social development. Helping children with ASD requires qualified and highly trained individuals working together with families.

Private Day School

Building Blocks offers a private day school for children age 2 to 12 with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The school is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and is currently pursuing accreditation by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF). The curriculum is designed based on each child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  Building Blocks utilizes a variety of teaching modalities, including but not limited to:

  1. Applied Behavior Analysis

  2. Discrete Trail Teaching (DTT)

  3. Verbal Behavior (VB)

  4. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

  5. The Listening Program (TLP)

  6. Natural Environment Teaching/Play Therapy

  7. Social Skills Group/Social Stories

  8. Sensory Integration


Building Blocks school prioritizes the following educational objectives:

  1. to teach students how to correctly discriminate among different stimuli

  2. to teach students how to follow expressed requests

  3. to assist in the development of expressive language schools

  4. to move students toward meaningful social interaction

  5. to facilitate continued educational experiences in other environments

Other Services

Building Blocks also offers the following services:

  1. Diagnostic and behavioral services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

  2. Training and in-services on best practices for education students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

  3. Individual or classroom consultations to school systems and other organizations to provide guidance for establishing or improving programing

  4. Individual assessment to assess the child’s skills across all developmental areas and develop appropriate goals and programming

  5. Behavior assistants to provide individualized support in the classroom and/or at home

  6. Transition services to ensure a successful inclusion process between different educational settings
